Derry: "The Troubles" in Ireland

Derry is known for it's murals illuminating the turbulent recent past often referred to as "The Troubles". This dove represents peace and the outline of the oak leaf is an icon for Derry.

A recreation of Picasso's Guernica. Some muralists related the British hold on Ireland to events of the past - including the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

And Goya...

More art - the bombing on the right depicts an event in 1990. It's jarring to think about how recently these events occurred.

There's certainly a different feeling in Derry than in other parts of Ireland. This sign and Republic of Ireland flag aren't left over from the 90s. This is an important part of history that continues to impact lives.

The iconic Peace Bridge connects the east and west banks of the river Foyle.
A contemporary statue recognizes healing and peace. It's important to note that the hands aren't yet touching and that the artist is showing both men, firmly planted on either side.
