Kilkenny and a Big Castle

Day Two: Kilkenny. About 1.5 hrs south east from home base, Kilkenny is a historic town and home to a castle owned by the Butler family from the middle ages. AND thanks to Mom's genealogy research, we know that we are descendants from the Butler family - but that didn't get us any VIP privileges!
Kilkenny castle from the courtyard. Now a "U" shape, the original structure was a 4-tower and 4-wall fortress. Cromwell knocked down a wall and when it was renovated as a residential castle, it was left as a "U" shape because the view was so nice.

Gorgeous and fragrant roses! Blue skies! Great day!

Family pic!

Maggie has decided she needs to meet a photobomb quota. So this gets posted for ruining my shot!

Panoramic of the grounds. The back entrance of the castle opens up to a beautiful garden and fountain.

Dinner at Kytellers Inn - a 13th century building with a rich history. The original proprietor was accused of witchcraft and fled to avoid being burned at the stake. Now a tourist destination, we enjoyed good food, and trad music.

Smiles!

The (second) first pint! (We were too tired last night to remember to take a picture of the real first pint.)

Slante!

Dad looking serious...see the photobomb?

The Smithwick's brewery - unfortunately tours were closed due to remodeling for the season.

Dad's happy!

Pretty colors!

Not sure what's going on with Dad in this picture, but the St. Canice Cathedral in the background is the resting place of a Butler ancestor.
